Advisory Board Members

Anthony Aycock, MLIS is the public services librarian at the brand-new Charlotte School of Law (http://www.charlottelaw.org).  Before that, he was a librarian at Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, the largest law firm in North Carolina.  He also managed the law department library at Duke Energy Corporation.  Anthony has taught legal research at UNC Charlotte since 2003.  He has also led seminars on electronic legal research for the Mecklenburg County Bar and the National Business Institute.  In the modern law firm, paralegals do more than traditional legal research.  They are asked to research medical conditions or run a background check or find the officers and directors of a company.  Anthony teaches his students these non-legal skills.

David Broome, J.D. is the general counsel of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. His duties include providing day-to-day legal advice to the senior administrative officers; serving as liaison with the legal staff of The University of North Carolina system and Office of the Attorney General of North Carolina; representing the University before a variety of State and federal administrative agencies; drafting and reviewing campus-wide policies and procedures; conducting workshops for campus administrators in legal and administrative matters; drafting and reviewing contracts; and providing legal advice on business transactions.

His professional memberships include the Mecklenburg County Bar, North Carolina State Bar, North Carolina Bar Association, Licensing Executives Society, and National Association of College and University Attorneys.

Education:  University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, J.D. and B.A., Morehead Scholar.


Dr. Marcia Greci, J.D. is an associate at Summa, Allan & Additon, where she concentrates her practice on patent prosecution and patent infringement investigations. Dr. Greci is an expert in nanotechnology synthetic methods and applications, including semiconductor technology and surface modification.

Dr. Greci earned her Ph.D. in Polymer and Organic Chemical Synthetic Methodology from the University of Southern California. While studying at the University of Southern California, she conducted research on Polymer Nanosphere Synthesis and Functionalization under the direction of Dr. G.K.S. Prakash and Dr. George A. Olah, 1994 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. She also researched practical applications of functionalized nanospheres, including their use in fuel cells, catalytic methods, and drug delivery systems. As a graduate student, Dr. Greci earned both the Excellence in Teaching Award and the Excellence in Research Award.

Judge Carl Horn is Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Western District of North Carolina. A former Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney (1987-93), he is the author of the Fourth Circuit Criminal Handbook; Horn's Federal Criminal Jury Instructions for the Fourth Circuit; and Lawyerlife: Finding a Life and a Higher Calling in the Practice of Law; and co-author of Law for Physicians: An Overview of Medical Legal Issues and Federal Civil Practice in the Fourth Circuit.

Judge Horn has served Mecklenburg County in many capacities: as a member of a school board; as a youth soccer and wrestling coach; as a mentor for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg public schools; as a judge in North Carolina’s mock trial program; and as a member of several non-profit boards of directors.

Chris Lam, J.D. is an associate in the litigation department at Kennedy Covington Lobdell & Hickman and a member of the commercial litigation practice group.  He has defended area hospitals, major financial consulting companies, television stations, North Carolina county governments, a NASCAR owner, physicians, and major law firms in a variety of complex lawsuits.

He was named Young Lawyer of the Year by Mecklenburg County Bar, Guardian of the Environment by the Charlotte Observer, and received the Large Firm Pro Bono Services Award from the North Carolina Bar Association.

Chris is a Trustee on the Duke University Board of Trustees, a member of the Duke University Alumni Advisory Committee, a member of the North Carolina State Bar Board of Law Examiners, Bar Candidate Committee, and a member of the Mecklenburg County Bar, Member, CLE Committee, Lawyers Teaching Justice

Jeffrey Michael, J.D. is the Director of the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute, which provides a range of affordable fee based services to non-profit organizations, educational institutions, government, businesses, and citizens. 

Prior to joining the Urban Institute, Mr. Michael was the Executive Director, Wildacres Leadership Initiative, a statewide Leadership program committed to improving human relations in North Carolina. Signature program is the William C. Friday Fellowship for Human Relations, a two-year leadership program for emerging leaders in North Carolina; the Executive Director, The LandTrust for Central North Carolina; and co-founder and first Executive Director of a regional non-profit land conservancy serving ten counties in central North Carolina, where he worked to protect nearly 5,000 acres of natural areas, historic sites and open space. 

Mr. Michael received the William C. Friday Fellowship for Human Relations and was recognized as an emerging leader by the Fellowship Program of the Wildacres Leadership Initiative, and is a member of the Conservation Trust of North Carolina, Board of Directors, Morrow Mountain State Park, Chair, Park Advisory Committee, Vote for America—North Carolina Chapter, Board of Directors, and the NC Watershed Coalition, Board of Directors.

Stephanie Elliott-Park, N.C.C.P. is a senior litigation paralegal for the law firm of Gray, Layton, Kersh, Solomon, Sigmon, Furr & Smith, P.A., in Gastonia, NC. She specializes in litigation, and her experience also encompasses employment litigation, personal injury, insurance defense, trust and estates, and corporate and complex business litigation.  She has experience with filings in the North Carolina Complex Business Court; State Court filings in counties across North Carolina; Federal Filings in the Western, Eastern and Middle districts of North Carolina. Mrs. Elliott -Park is also an executive committee member of the North Carolina Paralegal Association and serves as the Articles and Associations news editor.

Vicki L. Sgro, N.C.C.P., is the IP Paralegal for Clariant Corporation, a global leader in the field of specialty chemicals, which is represented on five continents with over 100 group companies, employs approximately 22,500 people. Headquartered in Muttenz near Basel, Switzerland, it generated sales of around CHF 8.2 billion in 2005.  Clariant's businesses are organized in five divisions: Textile, Leather & Paper Chemicals, Pigments & Additives, Functional Chemicals, Life Science Chemicals and Masterbatches.
Vicki has been employed with Clariant Corporation for over the past 7 years and is responsible for U.S. and foreign patent matters including management of PC Master database.  Vicki has over 20 years of patent experience.  Before working for Clariant Corporation, Vicki worked for Alston & Bird, LLP’s Charlotte Office as a foreign patent paralegal and Birch, Stewart, Kolasch & Birch in Falls Church, VA as the Supervisor of the Records Department.  In addition to her work experience, Vicki has an Associate Degree in Business. 
Vicki previously held positions in the Metrolina Paralegal Association (MPA), Second Vice President, Programs, two terms, 2004-06 and MPA, Patron Chair, 2006-07

Marguerite (Mardy) J. Watson, ACP NCCP is the Contract Administrator at S&D Coffee in Concord.  She has also worked as Paralegal at First Charter Bank and as Senior Paralegal at Duke Energy Corporation, both in Charlotte. She is experienced in corporate law, regulatory law, and litigation.  Mardy has served on the North Carolina State Bar Board of Paralegal Certification since 2004.  She is active in the North Carolina Bar Association’s Paralegal Division, the North Carolina Paralegal Association, and the Metrolina Paralegal Association.  Mardy received her Paralegal Technology Certificate from Central Piedmont Community College in 1996.

Professional Certification:  North Carolina State Bar Certified Paralegal (2005); National Association of Legal Assistants Advanced Paralegal Certification (1996); and National Federation of Paralegal Associations PACE Registered Paralegal (1996).


Tanya L. Willis, NCCP is the Custody Advocacy Paralegal at the Council for Children’s Rights.  The Custody Advocacy Program represents the best interests of children in high-conflict custody and visitation cases.  Prior to joining the Council for Children’s Rights, Tanya served area families as a Social Worker and Case Manager with Child Care Resources, Inc. and Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services.

Tanya has a Bachelor of Science and Post-Baccalaureate Paralegal Certificate from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  She is a member of the Metrolina Paralegal Association, the North Carolina Bar Association Legal Assistants Division, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and serves as secretary of her Homeowners Association Board of Directors.
