Overview

The Intermediate Chinese Language Certificate is a three-course sequence designed for adults to expand their knowledge of Chinese language and China at an intermediate level. The courses are offered in a live online format typically one night (6:30 - 8:30 p.m.) per week for 8 weeks.

Students completing this certificate will be prepared to reach the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Intermediate Middle to Intermediate High proficiency on listening and speaking as well as pass HSK-level 2.

Intermediate High Level of Chinese speakers converse with ease and confidence when dealing with routine tasks and social situations. They are able to handle successfully uncomplicated tasks and social situations requiring an exchange of basic information related to their work, school, recreation, particular interests, and areas of competence.

Program Benefits

  • Individual Tutoring - 30-minute weekly individual tutoring sessions via video conferencing tools (i.e. FaceTime, Google Hangout, Skype). Students will receive tailored training on their pronunciation and dialogue ability.
  • Experienced native speakers - All courses are taught by experienced teachers and/or native Chinese speakers
  • Expert-curated curriculum - Instructional materials and topics have been reviewed by the Confucius Institute's Faculty Advisory Council, composed of UNC Charlotte faculty.

HSK Preparation

Students who complete the Introductory Chinese Course Series and meet all of the requirements will be prepared to pass the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, Chinese Proficiency Exam) level 2 with ease.

CPP 208 Intermediate Chinese I Designed for participants who have completed the Introductory Chinese Certificate or with ACTFL proficiency of Novice High. How to describe travel plans, to make travel arrangements by taking a train, bus, airplane or taxi, to reserve and check into and out of a hotel. Describe the basic Chinese cooking methods and to talk about the cooking ingredients and dietary concerns in China.
CPP 209 Intermediate Chinese II CPP 208 or ACTFL proficiency between Novice High and Intermediate Low How to describe a person’s appearance, personality, hobbies, their hometown, their lifestyle, the layout and surroundings of a house, but also discuss feelings when taking exams and exchange information about exams as well.
CPP 210 Intermediate Chinese III CPP 209 or ACTFL proficiency between Intermediate Low and Intermediate Middle How to describe past shopping experiences and offer simple advice about shopping, vacation, and future career plan briefly, and discuss different hobbies and interests of different people.
