Course Overview

The College and Career Coaching Certificate equips counselors, educators, advisors, parents, and non-profit personnel with essential knowledge and strategies for culturally competent and equity focused practices. The certificate is designed to meet the needs of individuals seeking access to postsecondary education that is aligned to career and personal interests. Curriculum will cover college admissions advising, career coaching, financial aid planning, and increasing access to postsecondary education. The Academic Partner will infuse concepts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Course Outline

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  1. Identify culturally responsive college coaching and advising practices
  2. Know and apply career theories
  3. Understand strategies for financial aid and scholarship planning
  4. Identify strategies for increasing access for all students to postsecondary education
  5. Use culturally responsive practices in guiding caregivers through the college admissions and financial aid processes

About the Instructor

Dr. Sejal Parikh Foxx is a Professor and Counseling Department Chair. She is also the Director of the Urban School Counseling Collaborative. She has experience as an elementary and high school counselor. She is co-author of School Counseling in the 21st Century, 6th ed. In 2015, she received the Counselor Educator of the Year Award from the North Carolina School Counselors Association. She teaches both doctoral and master's level courses and her special areas of interest are school counseling, multicultural and social justice, urban education, and creating equity and access to college and career readiness. She has been successful working with interdisciplinary teams to obtain over $2 million dollars in grant funding from the Department of Education and National Science Foundation.
